The Buy Box Went Local. Here's How to See Yours.

The seller winning your listing in Texas can be losing it in Washington at the same moment. Your Buy Box % averages that away.

Pull up one of your listings from your desk. Then ask a seller friend three states away to pull up the same one. There's a real chance you're not looking at the same Buy Box winner.

That isn't a glitch. Amazon awards the Buy Box based partly on where the shopper is, and the seller winning in Texas can be losing in Washington at the same moment.

If you've ever watched your Buy Box % hold steady while sales slid, or cut price and saw nothing happen, this is probably part of the reason.

The Buy Box isn't one contest anymore

Amazon weighs delivery when it picks the featured offer. The shopper's location changes which offers can get there fastest, so it changes who wins. Prime status plays in too.

This isn't a theory. In January 2025, Amazon added location data to its own seller pricing API (Amazon's announcement (opens in a new tab)). One endpoint shows which offer is featured for each shopper segment, with a sample ZIP code. Another returns the price you'd need to win in that specific location.

So one listing can have many Buy Box contests running at once, and Amazon says so in its own documentation.

Why your Buy Box % can look fine while you lose sales

Your Buy Box share is an average. It blends every location and every moment into one number.

Say you win most of the East Coast and lose the whole West Coast. Your share could still look healthy, and nothing in that number tells you California shoppers never see your offer.

The average also hides wasted margin. If you already win in most places, cutting price to push the national number up may not win you a single new area. You just give back margin where you were already winning.

Two questions matter more than the national %:

  • Where am I losing, and to whom?
  • Is that area worth the price cut it would take to win it?

We saw this on a real client listing: Amazon's API named our client as a Buy Box owner, and a state-by-state scan showed them holding 20% of the country. The full story, including the 50-cent move that took them to 58%, is here.

Walmart works this way too

Most of the talk about local Buy Boxes is about Amazon, partly because Amazon documents it in its seller API.

The Walmart Buy Box can also change by location, and delivery speed is a big part of it. A seller with inventory close to the shopper can win there with fast delivery, while a different seller wins somewhere else.

Flashpricer double-validates Walmart Buy Box data across multiple sources, which is how Buy Box by State can show who owns a Walmart listing in each state.

See your local Buy Box with Buy Box by State

Buy Box by State scans who owns the Buy Box on a listing in all 50 states plus DC, in about a minute. For each listing you get:

  • The share of the map you own
  • Who's winning the states you're not, and at what price
  • Delivery speed on the winning offers

Buy Box by State results for an Amazon listing: the seller holds 18 of 45 states with a Buy Box, against two competitors, with prices and status for each state

Here's how we'd use it:

  1. Find listings where your map share is low even though your national Buy Box % looks fine.
  2. Check whether you're losing on price or on delivery speed. A price cut won't fix a delivery gap.
  3. Decide which areas are worth fighting for. If winning one region means cutting deep into a thin margin, holding price may be the better call.
  4. Adjust min/max or strategy on the listings where it pays off, then run the map again to see what moved.

Map share makes a better scorecard than one national number, because it shows where you stand instead of averaging it away.
